COVID-19 / Coronavirus
FOR THE COUNTY POLICY ISSUED ON 3/9/20, CLICK HERE.
I would like to share information with you regarding COVID-19 (coronavirus). As you are probably aware, this is a new disease and rapidly evolving situation.
1. Get the details: This factsheet from the CDC answers the most common questions about COVID-19 such as symptoms and spread of the disease.
2. Precautions listed on the form linked above include the following:
How can I help protect myself?
People can help protect themselves from respiratory illness with everyday preventive actions.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
If you are sick, to keep from spreading respiratory illness to others, you should
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
3. Also, here is information I received from the Lead Nurse in charge of our ACPS school nurses:
As you may be aware, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the state Virginia Department of Health and our local Thomas Jefferson Health Department are actively surveilling reported diagnosed and suspected cases of COVID-10, and travelers from areas with diagnosed cases with person-to-person transmitted cases are being screened and quarantined if warranted before being allowed to return to their communities. As of now, there are no diagnosed cases in Virginia (please see the link above).
While there is a lot about COVID-19 that is still unknown, public health experts predict that it is possible that wide-spread illness may occur and encourage communities to plan for that possibility. Albemarle County Public Schools is actively planning, in conjunction with the Thomas Jefferson Department of Health, for managing operations in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak or epidemic in our area. The plan includes responding to cases of illnesses that may arise in the community or in a school, as well as communication, education and infection control measures. Once the plan is complete, it will be shared with all of our stakeholders.
4. A few other things to note:
VERY IMPORTANT: If your student is sick – as stated above – please keep him/her at home.
If your student is at school and feels sick, please make sure they check in with our nurse (sometimes students call a parent, a parent shows up to pick up the student – and our nurse was never contacted). In this way, our nurse can track information about potential types of cases (and, if need be, we can contact the local Thomas Jefferson Health Department).
I will cover information regarding common sense precautions (washing hands, not touching the face, etc.) on our WBMS news broadcasts tomorrow morning and throughout the coming days.
If and when I have more information to share, I will send out an update.
¿Cómo puedo ayudar a protegerme?
