Info for the Start of the Year
Una traducción al español está abajo.
The start of school is getting closer! New teachers started work with county today, and all other teachers return next Monday, 8/12. Before you know it, the new school year will have started! Here is some information you need to know:
1. Student schedules in the Parent Portal will be available in the late afternoon of Wednesday, 8/14. The start of the school year is very busy, though, so as we learn of students moving into or out of our district, we will continue to make changes to balance classes – so be sure to check for any changes before coming to our Open House.
2. Our Open House is scheduled for Monday, 8/19, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Be sure to print an updated copy of your student’s schedule that day just in case any changes were made. There is no program scheduled during Open House; this is just a chance to walk through the building, see classrooms, and meet teachers.
NOTE: Please don’t confuse our Open House with the Charlottesville “Back to School Bash” on Saturday, August 17. That is a separate event. Information is here: http://www.cvillebacktoschoolbash.com/

3. I have attached a map of the building that you can print to bring with you on 8/19. Page 2 of the map includes all faculty names and room numbers.
4. I have also attached a copy of the bell schedule for this year. |

5. Other dates to mark on your calendars: “Back-to-School Night” for parents: Thursday, 9/5, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; We will also host two evenings of parent conferences: Thursday, 10/17, and Thursday, 10/24, from 4:40 – 8:00 p.m. Sign-ups for conferences will come later via a message about “Sign Up Genius.”
6. Classes start at 9:04 a.m. If you drive your student to school: In the morning you can drop students off in front of the school on Rose Hill Drive. However, be sure to pull up to the curb (on the school side of Rose Hill) to drop off your student. Occasionally (about two to three times per year) the police monitor the area, and they have ticketed drivers in the past who “double park” (i.e., stop completely or partially in the traffic lane of Rose Hill Drive to drop off their student) – so again, be sure to pull up next to the curb.
7. PICKING UP STUDENTS EARLY: If/when you have to pick up your student early, you can park on Rose Hill Drive and pick up your student and leave from the Main Office. However, in order to control traffic congestion at the end of the day on Rose Hill Drive (at the request of the city police department), students who are picked up at 3:45 or later must be picked up in the “parent pick up area” behind the school.
If you plan to pick up your student at or after 3:45 p.m., call the main office, and we will send your student to the parent pick-up area to meet you.
To get to the parent pick up area, turn on Henry Drive and take the second right into the lower parking lot. See below for more details.
8. PARENT PICK UP AREA: As stated above, to get to the parent pick up area, turn on Henry Drive and take the second right into the lower parking lot. Follow the arrows so that all traffic flows in a single line around the lot. It can be a confusing lot, so be sure to follow the arrows.
If you pick up your student, either stay in your car and drive around the loop to the pick up area where you can pick up your child at the curb – or you can park in one of the spots, and then you can come to retrieve your student at the pick up area.
For new parents: If this sounds confusing, don’t worry. I will be in the pick up area with staff members to help direct the flow of traffic. It will make sense once you see it in action. J
NOTE: If there are any remaining students once all of the cars have left from the parent pick up area (usually by about 4:15), we all go back to the Front Office, and the final students can be picked up in the front of the building (again, starting at about 4:15).
Is your 8th grader on an athletic team at AHS or MHS? Ask us about how best to pick up your student to facilitate getting to the high school for practice.
9. BUS NOTES: If you send in a note for a student to change his/her bus routine (i.e., getting off at a different stop or riding a different bus home with a friend, etc.), tell your student to drop the note off in the front office before noon. Later in the day we will provide the student with an approved bus pass. Please note that certain buses might be too crowded to accommodate additional riders. Therefore, we need to get bus notes/requests early so that we can alert students and parents if there are any issues with crowded buses.
NOTE: During the first ten days, students must ride their own buses. We will not accept notes for bus passes/changes until after the first ten days of school.
I will send out additional information soon – re: laptop distribution for students; field trip permission forms; the BMS yearbook; etc.
We are looking forward to a great year! See you on the 19th!
