More Info for the Start of the Year
Una traducción al español aparece a continuación.
The start of school is getting closer! Here is more information you need to know:
1. Student schedules in the Parent Portal will be available this Friday, 8/10, in the afternoon. The start of the school year is very busy, though, as we learn of students moving into or out of the area, so we still make changes to balance classes.
2. Our Open House is on Monday, 8/20, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Be sure to print an updated copy of your student’s schedule that day just in case any changes were made.
3. I have attached a map of the building that you can print and bring with you on 8/20. Page 2 of the map includes all faculty names and room numbers.
NOTE: Room 108 will not be accessible on 8/20. I believe this will be the only portion of the building that will not be ready (due to an ambitious summer of construction projects).
4. Other dates to mark on your calendars: “Back-to-School Night” for parents: Thursday, 9/6, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; We will also host two evenings of parent conferences: Thursday, 9/27, and Thursday, 10/4, from 4:40 – 8:00 p.m. Sign-ups for conferences will come later via a message about “Sign Up Genius.”
5. Classes start at 9:04 a.m. In the morning you can drop students off in front of the school on Rose Hill Drive. However, be sure to pull up to the curb (on the school side of Rose Hill) to drop off your student. Occasionally the police monitor the area, and they have ticketed drivers in the past who “double park” (i.e., stop completely or partially in the traffic lane of Rose Hill Drive to drop off their student) – so again, be sure to pull up next to the curb.
6. EARLY DROP OFF: Students can report to the cafeteria as of 8:30 a.m., and on most mornings our library opens at 8:00 a.m. We will be having faculty meetings on the second Thursday of each month, so the library is not available for early arrivals on those days.
7. PICKING UP STUDENTS EARLY: If/when you have to pick up your student early, you can park on Rose Hill Drive and pick up your student and leave from the Main Office. However, in order to control traffic congestion at the end of the day on Rose Hill Drive (at the request of the city police department), students who are picked up at 3:45 or later must be picked up in the “parent pick up area” behind the school.
If you pick up your student after 3:45 p.m., stop in or call the main office, and we will send your student to the parent pick-up area.
To get to the parent pick up area, turn on Henry Drive and take the second right into the lower parking lot. See “Parent Pick Up Area” below for more details.
8. PARENT PICK UP AREA: As stated above, to get to the parent pick up area, turn on Henry Drive and take the second right into the lower parking lot. Follow the arrows so that all traffic flows in a single line around the lot.
If you pick up your student, either stay in your car and drive around the loop to the pick up area where you can pick up your child at the curb. If you park your car, we ask that an adult get out of the car and come over to the pick up area to retrieve students. We do not want students darting into the lot without an adult because the area gets so congested when students are dismissed from school.
For new parents: If this sounds confusing, don’t worry. I will be in the pick up area with staff members to help direct the flow of traffic. It will make sense once you see it in action.
NOTE: Once the parent pick up area has cleared (usually by about 4:15), if there are any remaining students, we go back to the Front Office, and the final students can be picked up in the front of the building (again, starting at about 4:15).
9. Is your 8th grader on an athletic team at AHS or MHS? Ask us about how best to pick up your student to facilitate getting to the high school for practice.
10. BUS NOTES: If you send in a note for a student to change his/her bus routine (i.e., getting off at a different stop or riding a different bus home with a friend, etc.), tell your student to drop the note off in the front office before noon. Later in the day we will provide the student with an approved bus pass.
Please note: Certain buses might be too crowded to accommodate additional riders. Therefore, we need to get bus notes/requests early so that we can alert students and parents if there are any issues with crowded buses.
I will send out additional information soon – re: laptop distribution for students; taking laptops home (the form required for that); field trip permission forms; the BMS yearbook; etc.
We are looking forward to a great year! See you on the 20th!
