Updates as the End of the Year Nears
Information is below on the following topics:
1. The last day of school: If your student has completed work for the past six weeks (4/13 to 5/22), then this Friday is your student’s last day of school. How do you know if your student has completed the work? Click HERE and scroll down to “Student Work.” There is a file there you can download that explains how to check.
If your student needs addition time (some are working from printed copies and/or flash drives, etc.), then they can complete the work on or before Friday, May 29, or even Friday, 6/5.
2. Returning school property: At some point we will plan times for parents/students to return school property (laptops, library books, Language Arts novels, musical instruments, etc.). No dates have been set for this yet, but we will plan for this once we have received guidelines from the school district. The dates for the return of property will come at some point after the Governor’s stay-at-home order (which currently runs through June 10).
For now, just begin discussing and/or collecting what will have to be returned (for example, Mr. Hipple our librarian told me that over 500 of our library books were checked out prior to the closing of schools).
3. BREAKING NEWS: I was literally just about hit “send” with my email message with all of these updates when I received this information about school laptops: “We (ACPS) will not require (student) laptops and iPads to be returned until school resumes in the fall. This will enable students to participate in enrichment and other digital learning opportunities over the summer. Additional information you need to know is HERE.
4. Yearbooks: If you ordered a yearbook, they could arrive as late as the week of June 5 – or even a little later (the plant was shut down for a short time – but they are producing our yearbook). When they arrive, I will be in touch on how to pick it up…and/or we will mail them to you.
NOTE: I will attempt to coordinate the delivery with the dates mentioned above for the return of school property.
5. Pictures of Current 8th Graders: We would like to honor our 8th graders this year by posting their pictures and a statement of congratulations and/or a favorite quote on Instagram (@BurleyPics):
6. Back to School? Well, I have no information to report yet, except that the county has convened a “Return to School Taskforce.” They are discussing the “when & how” this might happen in the fall. If/when news is ready to be reported, I will send it out.
7. Mathcounts State Competition: With the help from Mr. Worozbyt, our Match Club coach Robert Tupelo-Schneck was able to get a team together for last week’s Mathcounts State Compeition. Info on all the Mathcounts events last week is HERE. Congratulations to Eric Chen for a silver medal, the Burley team for a bronze medal, and Laveen Hiranandani and Erik Rebhorn for honorable mentions.
8. BMS in the News: Here is some information I rec’d from Mr. Barber: Last Thursday, NBC29 sent a reporter to Burley while the Rivanna Conservation Alliance was planting the wetland plants in the muddy part of the tiny field next to the lower parking lot. Originally the plans were to have 6th graders out there planting this area. With the quarantine, we had to rely on RCA volunteers to do the planting. I was out there for a few hours getting my hands dirty.
HERE is the link to the NBC29 news story about the wetland project. It looks like it did not make the TV news, but it is on their website.
9. The Daily Progress recently published an article “Vital Signs: How to support children during the coronavirus pandemic” by Jen Senator, a Region 10 student assistance counselor who works at Burley. The article is: HERE
